      Good question cool1!

Cancers grow when our cells develop mutations that lead to them growing and dividing very quickly, so that a tumour forms. A lot of mutations are needed to make a cancer grow and get dangerous. There are lots of things that can cause mutations to happen. One thing that can cause mutations is actually bad diet and apparently about 10% of cancers may be related to diet. This can be caused by not eating enough fruit and veg or maybe from eating too much red meat or too much salt. As it is only 10%, then most cancers are not caused by diet. Other causes of mutation to lead to cancer would include drinking alcohol and smoking, as well as exposure to harmful irradiation and chemicals. A lot of mutations that make us more likely to get cancer are inherited in your genes from your parents. These mutations don’t guarantee that you will get cancer, but can make it more likely for you to get a particular type of cancer.

Also, mutations happen fairly randomly over time, so the longer you live, the more likely you are to get the mutations that will lead to cancer. This is why so many older people get cancer and why more people get cancer now than they did a long time ago when people didn’t live as long.

Although a bad diet doesn’t cause a lot of cancer, a good diet of healthy foods might help to protect you from cancer, so it is important to be careful about what you eat! And a bad diet can make you more likely to get a lot of other diseases as well.
